Purchasing a practical car is something that most people should be thinking about when it comes time to buy their first vehicle. However, for most first-time-car buyers, often, this minute detail is forgotten. As a result, in the long run, people wind up paying quite a bit more than they originally bargained for when it comes time to pay for their vehicle. For example, a vehicle that might have cost you $27,000 on the sticker price may wind up really costing you upwards of $35,000 by the time all is said and done.

There are other reasons to purchase a practical car, and it comes down to knowing what kind of a driver you are. For instance, if you tend to drive a lot around town (aka: city driving), then you may want to purchase a car that is good on gasoline. However, if you are the kind of person who doesn't really travel much and has some money saved up, then you may be looking at a different kind of car in which you don't have to focus as much on gas mileage.

From economy sized cars to sport utility vehicles, a lot of what is going to determine the kind of car that is the most practical for you will come down to what you are actually planning on using the car for. For example, I remember when I first came down to North Carolina to go to college. I remember walking around the college campus and seeing all of these pickup trucks parked along side the road. Coming from the suburbs in Long Island where the only pickup trucks you saw were the ones belonging to the landscapers, it was quite a change. Instead of most of the pickup trucks being dirty or carrying construction materials (or something similar) in the backs of them, most of these pickup trucks were polished and looked as if they were just bought. I was baffled at the fact that someone would purchase a pickup truck and then not use it to actually “pick up” anything for transporting purposes.

If you are the kind of person who likes to go off-roading a lot, then there are various types of sport utility vehicles out there that can suite your budget and your needs. However, if you belong to a sorority and prefer a more demure car that can transport you and your friends around town, then you probably want to look at various types of sedans to fit within your budget. The first thing to remember when buying a car that is practical is to recognized that the word 'practical' means different things to different people. That being said, what makes sense for you may not make sense for someone else and vice versa.

Buying a car is a huge step. Use the many resources that are available at your fingertips online. Figure out the blue book value and consider talking with a representative at a bank to find out what steps would be involved. Because it is a bank, they may have some valuable advice (knowing your account information) as to what kind of a car you should be looking for.
